The 10 best free AI tools in 2026

ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Mistral, Copilot, Perplexity… What each free AI really gives you in October 2026: the model, the limits, whether you need an account, and which one to pick for your needs.

Free AI assistants changed a lot in autumn 2026. Since October 8, ChatGPT gives its free users GPT-6 Luna. Since September 28, Claude offers its new Sonnet 5.5 without a subscription. Google went the other way on October 9: only the Flash-Lite model is still free in Gemini.

We compared the ten most useful free assistants as they stand on October 12, 2026: the model you actually get for free, the limits, whether you need an account, and what each one does with your data.

Disclosure: Quenzai, the site you are reading, is part of this ranking. It is our tool. We placed it where we think it belongs and list its limits just as we do for the others.

How we ranked these free AI tools

Each assistant was judged on its free version only, without subscriber features. Five criteria mattered:

  • The quality of the model you get for free, not the publisher's best model.
  • How generous the limits are: messages, images, files, web search.
  • The quality of answers in languages other than English.
  • Whether you can use it without creating an account.
  • How personal data is handled (where it is stored, under which law).

The comparison at a glance

As of October 12, 2026. Publishers change their free plans often and do not always publish exact limits.

1. ChatGPT: the most complete free assistant

ChatGPT is still the benchmark. Since August 2026, OpenAI no longer caps the number of text messages on free accounts, and since October 8 those messages run on GPT-6 Luna, the light version of its new generation. Subscribers get the more powerful GPT-6 Sol.

The free version also includes web search, file and image uploads, image generation and voice, with tighter quotas than paid plans. OpenAI does not publish all of these quotas. You can use it without an account, but history, voice and custom instructions require signing up.

  • Strengths: unlimited text messages, a wide range of tools, polished apps.
  • Limits: image and file quotas not published, the best model stays paid.

2. Claude: the best for writing and reasoning

Since September 28, 2026, Anthropic gives free accounts its Sonnet 5.5 model, on the web and in the apps. It is one of the best models available for writing, summarizing a long document or following multi-step reasoning, and it sounds natural in many languages.

The trade-off is the limits. They are counted over windows of a few hours and depend on the length of your conversations and server load. A long document or a lengthy chat uses them up quickly. The most powerful model, Opus 5.5, is for subscribers only. An account is required.

  • Strengths: writing quality, long documents, natural tone.
  • Limits: quotas reached quickly, account required.

3. Gemini: handy if you live in Google

Gemini used to have the most generous free plan of the big publishers. Since October 9, 2026, users without a subscription only get the Flash-Lite model, the lightest in the range; Flash and Pro require a Google AI subscription.

Gemini still has real strengths: its links with Gmail, Docs, Drive and Google Search, and features such as image generation. You can try it on the website without signing in, but with a single model and no file uploads; the mobile app requires a Google account.

  • Strengths: Google integration, free with no credit card.
  • Limits: Flash-Lite only since October 9, quotas not published.

4. Vibe (formerly Le Chat): Mistral's European AI

Mistral AI renamed Le Chat to Vibe in May 2026 without changing its plans. It is the strongest European alternative: a French company, data handled under European law, and excellent answers in French and other European languages.

The free version includes web search, image generation, document analysis and agent creation. Volume is limited, though: a few dozen messages a day according to published tests, as Mistral gives no official figure. A free account is required.

  • Strengths: European company and law, excellent in French.
  • Limits: small daily volume, account required.

5. Microsoft Copilot: the AI already on your PC

Copilot runs on OpenAI models and Bing search. It is free at copilot.microsoft.com, in Windows and in the Edge browser, and you can ask a simple question without a Microsoft account.

Microsoft describes free use as "subject to available capacity", with no exact figure. Since April 2026, Copilot is no longer free inside Word, Excel and PowerPoint: that requires a Microsoft 365 Copilot license.

  • Strengths: already on Windows, built-in web search, no account needed.
  • Limits: unpublished caps, no longer free inside Office.

6. Quenzai: free, no sign-up, in 14 languages (our tool)

Quenzai is our site. It works right in your browser with no account: 20 free messages a day, plus 4 images and 2 files (Word, Excel, PDF) a day, in 14 languages. It relies on third-party language models, chosen for the quality of their answers.

Its limits are real: once those daily allowances are used, you have to wait until the next day or subscribe, and the market's best models (GPT-6 Luna, Claude Opus 5.5, Gemini 3.8 Flash and Grok 4.7) are only available with Premium, which brings them together in a single interface. If you want to ask a question, create an image or draft a document right away without signing up, that is what we built it for.

  • Strengths: no account, images and files included for free, 14 languages, several AIs in one place for subscribers.
  • Limits: daily allowances, best models reserved for Premium.

7. Perplexity: for searching with sources

Perplexity is less a chat assistant than an answer engine: every answer cites the pages it comes from, which makes it the most reliable tool for checking a fact or doing quick research.

The free version gives unlimited basic searches with its in-house Sonar model, plus a few in-depth ("Pro") searches a day. It works without an account. For writing a long text, the assistants ranked higher do better.

  • Strengths: cited sources, unlimited basic searches, no account.
  • Limits: weaker at writing, in-depth searches are rationed.

8. DeepSeek: powerful, but your data goes to China

Chinese company DeepSeek offers its DeepSeek V4 model for free, and it is very good at reasoning, math and code. Its models are open-weight, so they can also be run on your own hardware.

But the app and website process your messages on servers in China, under Chinese law. Several European data protection authorities have challenged it: Italy had it removed from app stores in 2025, and Berlin's data protection commissioner ruled the transfer of this data to China unlawful. Avoid it for anything personal or work-related.

  • Strengths: very capable model, free, open-weight.
  • Limits: data stored in China, challenged in Europe, account required.

9. Grok: for following news on X

Grok, xAI's assistant, is free on grok.com and in the X app with a basic account. Its main appeal is live access to posts on X, useful for following a breaking story.

The free plan shrank in 2026: the newest model is for subscribers, image and video generation are no longer free, and users report roughly ten messages every two hours, as xAI publishes no figure.

  • Strengths: real-time news through X.
  • Limits: tight, unpublished quotas, best model paid.

10. Meta AI: the AI already in WhatsApp

Meta AI is built into WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and Facebook for free, including in Europe since 2025. There is nothing to install: you message it like a contact.

Handy for a quick question, Meta AI is more limited than dedicated assistants for writing or analyzing a document. Conversations go through Meta's services, worth keeping in mind for sensitive topics.

  • Strengths: nothing to install, available from WhatsApp.
  • Limits: less capable for long tasks, Meta ecosystem.

Which free AI should you choose?

There is no single best free AI, but there is a best one for each use:

  • To do everything with one tool: ChatGPT.
  • To write, summarize or analyze a long text: Claude.
  • To keep your data in Europe: Mistral's Vibe.
  • To check a fact with its sources: Perplexity.
  • To chat, create an image or a file without an account: Quenzai.
  • If you already use Gmail and Google Docs: Gemini.

What "free" really means

A free AI is not free of trade-offs. Publishers limit volume, keep their best models for subscribers and may use your conversations to improve their services: check each tool's privacy settings and never share sensitive data (health, bank details, passwords) with any assistant.

Plans also change very quickly: in two weeks, ChatGPT and Claude improved their free versions while Gemini cut back its own. We will update this comparison whenever something important changes.
